The BMW i8 has generated quite a lot of noise in the motoring world for being the first real attempt at a production electric super car from a mainstream manufacturer, and has won considerable plaudits for it’s various successes in doing so. Though some compromises have been made to make it so, there’s no denying that the car is a striking thing to look at, and the figures on paper are astonishing – 0 to 60 in around 5 seconds, but with a CO2 output which still allows it to be driven free of charge in the London congestion zone and makes it exempt from tax.
It is by no means perfect, having a few foibles in the handling and ride, but it is a startling demonstration of what can now be done in the electric sphere. Expect to see it’s technologies working down to more affordable, mainstream models soon.
