The R8 road car was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show on 30 September 2006 and was manufactured by the German car company, Audi. It is a two seater mid-engine sports car which uses the Audi “Quattro” all-wheel drive technology. The sports car which is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo, was designed by Audi AG’s high performance private subsidiary company, Quattro GmbH.
The first Audi R8 road cars came with a 4.2 litre V8 FSI Quattro engine and then in 2009 a new improved 5.2 litre FSI Quattro engine was released. In 2009 the R8 Spyder was introduced which was equipped with the same engine as the 5.2 litre model previous but was a soft top convertible. It required certain change such as extra chassis support, but remained very similar to the previous model. The UK model was sold for £111,955 OTR (manual) and £117,155 OTR (R tronic).
In 2011, Audi released a 4.2 version of the Spyder offering speeds of 0-60 mph in under five seconds.
